Go GREENS.

I made this recipe that was recommended by my friend, Susan the other day for Collard Greens. It turned out to be an amazingly fresh alternative to my family's usual bacon fatty Southern soaked version.

Collard Greens with Currants and Almonds
1 BUNCH COLLARD GREENS, CUT INTO 1 INCH STRIPS
1 MEDIUM YELLOW ONION- CHOPPED
Approx. 2 TBS. OLIVE OIL
2 CLOVES GARLIC- Minced
1/4 C. CURRANTS
1/4 C. SLIVERED ALMONDS

Heat large pot on high. Add olive oil (Be generous; Add more than 2 Tbs. if necessary), onion and garlic. Simmer on high for 1 minute then add collard greens, currants, and almonds. Toss in a splash of water for steaming. Let cook for six minutes stirring occasionally.

*I'm also going to bring these to my family's North Carolina Thanksgiving table this year, but I'm going to give pine nuts a try in the place of almonds. Mmmm!

Bored? Do Something.

Tonight:

Blood on the Wall w/ Abigail Warchild and Lights
MERCURY LOUNGE NYC

I've been listening to Blood on the Wall's recent release, Liferz constantly lately. Abigail Warchild produces sometimes heavy, sometimes jaunty tunes that you can always nod your head to, and the gals of Lights have been playing around town for the last couple of years. They are full of girly ethereal harmonies and summer breezy noodling guitar melodies lead by a VU-style thumping bass drum.

I Like To Say Things and Read Stuff

I found some pretty cool stuff at Bust's Craftacular yesterday. I made it home with this shirt by Seibei, and the brand new all natural body scrub by ingenuous sister duo, Biggs & Feathebelle. I wanted a ton of other stuff, but it was a bit of a madhouse. I hosted a video about some of the other vendors that should be up on Bust's website soon!
(No jokes about sugary nuts or scrubbing them, plz.)

A friend of mine just posted a link to the site for his newly opened comic book store, Desert Island. Check it out. The store is at 540 metropolitan in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

I really want these books (My birthday is exactly a month from today!!):

Bust's Spring Fling Craftacular is tomorrow at Warsaw in Greenpoint from 11am to 9pm.

GO! GO! GO! Lots of amazing vendors from NYC and the surrounding areas!

It's also 90's prom themed. So find the ugliest ruffled taffeta dress you can find, and rock that shit.

Sonic Youth At Heart

About a year ago while glued to the youtube one late evening, I found myself delving into the depths of some old Sonic Youth footage. I was completely shocked and delighted when I found a video of some old fogies (that weren't Sonic Youth) calling themselves Young@Heart performing "Schizophrenia."

Sonic Youth's Version from The Year Punk Broke

Turns out these geriatric jams reach beyond Sonic Youth to Gloria Gaynor, the Ramones, etc. Led by choral director, Bob Cilman,Young@Heart are ages 70+ and formed at an elderly housing project in Northhampton, Massachusetts. Their musical expertise runs the gamut from burlesque to pro theatre to none-at-all. Regardless of their musical experience, they are all on the same page about rockin' out.

Riding the train to work this morning, I looked down at someone's paper to see an ad for a feature length film on the group. It debuted in NYC on April 8th and is playing in Chelsea and Union Square!

Bustice

I hear that one or both of those studs from Justice are deejaying at Le Royale (Former Luke & Leroy, former home of the infamous Misshapes party, and now like if you took every bar in the Meatpacking District and put them on a party bus-- but less attractive.) tomorrow (Saturday) night.

SO, I figured that this is a good time to promote myself and post the article I wrote on the deejay duo for the February issue of Bust. This is the unedited version, btw. I don't have the copy of the mag here with me.

JUSTICE- Interviewed Feb 2008

It’s not every day that you get such a deal, but this month’s Boy du Jour gives you a two-for-one with electro-rock deejays Justice. Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Auge have spent the majority of the year traveling the globe to promote this past summer’s CROSS album, and it’s been almost impossible to catch them in one place. The group was discovered in 2003 by Pedro Winter, owner of Ed Banger Records and manager of electro-house heavyweights Daft Punk, after winning a contest remixing UK band Simian’s “We Are Your Friends.” Fast forward to now and Justice’s infectious hit ‘D.A.N.C.E.’ has been infiltrating clubs globally, as well as the mouths of teeny-boppers to those of legal drinking age and beyond. Upon their tour through the U.S., Auge noticed, “It’s different in the U.S. In France, we don’t have the 21 age limit [in clubs], so our audience is more between 14-18 years old.” De Rosnay adds, “The people were really nice [in the U.S.] Really crazy, but cool!” Using a giant glowing cross as an ongoing symbol for the group, and songs titled “Genesis” and “Waters of Nazareth”, one may mistaken the duo as a crusading Christian rock outfit. While de Rosnay was the better speaker of the two, Auge does most of the talking, evasively discussing the controversial themes behind their recent album, “Some people think we are radical Christians and some of them think we are just [using it for] marketing. It’s for everybody think what they want.” For now it seems the boys are doing what they want: Finishing up the remainder of their European tour and then settling back in Paris to prepare for the next round of elaborate light shows. If you were hoping to wrangle one of the jet-setting twosome, don’t give up hope! While Auge says he is not looking for a girlfriend upon Justice’s return to the United States, he did add with a gentle stutter, “I am just waiting for love.” His partner gives a bit too much information about his past exploits when addressing the subject, “Yes we have [girlfriends in the U.S.] But she won’t be your girlfriend unless you pee… This is something we discovered in the U.S.A. Golden showers… That’s why we love the U.S. girls.” He says this, exploding into laughter and then adding, “Oh. Don’t put that in your magazine.” I promised him I wouldn’t.

Published Feb 2008- Bust Magazine, Boy Du Jour

Cute, but filthy, those boys. I love their album, but I dunno if I can brave the circus. I'll certainly be attending the Secret Machines show tonight though.
